Julia Soboleva was born in Latvia in 1990. She lives and works in Stoke-on-Trent, UK. With a Master in Illustration from the Manchester School of Art, she has developed a prolific personal body of work, while taking part in projects in publishing, fashion and the music scene: Eels, British Film Institute, Nick Knight's ShowStudio, Bat for Lashes, David Gilmour...
Fueled by an instinctive creativity, Julia Soboleva began by archiving hundreds of anonymous photos, before reappropriating them to paint her spellbinding visual narratives. Her approach, shaped by themes of inner transformation and healing, explores the symbolic dimension between myth and collective memory, maintaining an almost mystical dialogue with the past.
Sensitive to the interpretations that her work provokes, the artist likes to compare her process to a visit to an imaginary hotel: room after room, doors are opened to reveal fragments of a much larger environment. Combining ritual gestures and surreal characters, the playlets in this intimate stroll open a breach in our daily lives. They invite us to dive into a fascinating strangeness, to discover our own emotional landscape.
